Tratto at the Triennale

"La vita a un tratto. Storia di Pietro", by Davide Longo and Tratto Pen is presented at the Milan Triennale Art Book by the author with Marzia Corraini, publisher, Alessandro Mendini, designer and architect and radio DJ and director, Linus.

According to Marzia Corraini, the practicality and design of the Tratto Pen immediately made it a key object in Italian life and work. Fila decided to celebrate its thirtieth anniversary in style, dedicating it a masterpiece. From here, the initial idea of a short story that narrates the historic course of this tool, evolving, thanks to the partnership with Davide Longo, into a novel.

Alessandro Mendini has been using Tratto Pen for thirty years for his writing and drawings. Moreover, the pen is contemporary of his famous Proust chair, born in a totally different cultural climate, adverse to design industrialisation and minimal objects by principle. Despite this, Mendini recognises the importance of Tratto Pen and always has one in his pocket.

Linus states he has always be fascinating by drawing. Since he was not able to transform this dream into a profession, he jokes that he "fell back" to becoming a DJ. He smiles noting the lucky coincidence of the birth of the Tratto Pen and his radio debut. However, he hasn't kicked the habit of drawing, taking notes and underlining. He likes decisive marks but, at the same time, clean and harmonious. For this reason, he is never found without his tratto. He has a blue one on his desk. Always.

Davide Longo explains that his book, with numerous photographs, emerged from the idea of telling the story of the first generation that held a Tratto Pen, his. Childish drawings, vacation postcards, love letters, housing classified ads... This any many other writings seemingly without particular meaning are the backbone of an entire life. Holding his Tratto, Pietro, the main character, faces all the most important stages of his life, that encounter the events that changed the history of Italy and the world.

According to Piero Frova, Fila marketing director, the idea behind the book is to celebrate Tratto Pen's thirtieth anniversary, in a special way, less "dusty", returning the pen and its history to the hands of those that created its success, the people who use it daily and those whose professions depend on it: designers, writers and even DJs (profession which, in closing, even he did not disdain as a youth....)
